Artemisia is the youngest child of Giovanni and Contessina Merisi. The Merisi family is originally from Florence, Italy and has a long history. The family's notoriaty begins in the early Renaissance, as they rose is the banking industry. They cultivated close ties with Gringotts as well as the infamous muggle family, the Medici. To this day ther Merisi control many aspects of banking in Florence. Giovanni was offered a position with the British Ministry of Magic as a liason to the powerful banking families of Italy. His older brother controlled the family's interest in Florence, so he eagerly took the opportunity, bringing his wife and young son to London. Contessina gave birth to their second child that May, granting her the name Artemisia Pace. Artemisia for a famous italian witch(known to muggles a painter) Artemisia Gentileschi, and Pace for peace.

Artemisia and her brother, Nicola, recieved strict and thorough tutoring. Italian was her first tongue, but she was quickly taught English. English was for school work, Italian for the home. Her parents stressed a well balanced education, in magical theory as well as logic, reading, mathematics and so on. She excelled at fact based academics, such as history. Artemisia also frequented many high society parties as a child, dressed up like a doll for display. Not that she minded, Artemisia was always a girly girl and loved the chance to play dress up. However she often spent most of such evenings close to her mother. Even as a child she was very shy and self concious.

Of course she was thrilled to continue her education at the prestigous Hogwarts. She quickly found a home in Ravenclaw, with others that place an importance on intelligence and it's application.
